Planning a hot night under the sheets, we can not think about venereal diseases. And if we have a long and monogamous relationship, we probably also think that we shouldn’t.
However, the possibility of infection and illness is as much a part of sex as pleasure. Both men and women receive them. It is even possible that we “glue” STDs without realizing it.
Knowledge is power when it comes to sexual health. Recognizing the symptoms is important, but we don’t always notice chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other sexually transmitted diseases, for example. The surest way to protect yourself and your partner is to get tested regularly. Fortunately, almost all STDs are treatable and often curable.
Here are the four most common ailments:
Human papillomavirus (HPV)
Almost every sexually active person has had HPV. This is the most common sexually transmitted disease. More than 40 types of HPV can be transmitted during sex. It can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Skin contact can also cause infection.
Chlamydia
Chlamydial infection is also one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. It is most commonly transmitted through vaginal and anal sex, but can also occur through oral sex. The disease begins with discharge from the vagina or penis, as well as burning pain when urinating. Very often it is asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is another common bacterial infection. People often get it along with chlamydia, and the symptoms are similar: unusual discharge from the vagina or penis, pain or burning when urinating. Gonorrhea symptoms appear in most men, but only 20% of women.
Syphilis
Syphilis is also called the “Great Mimic” because it presents with many different symptoms that often resemble those of other diseases. The disease begins with mild inflammation, and its advanced form can be expressed by skin rashes and sores in the mouth, vagina, anus, and other mucous membranes.
