Pain in the testicles can be caused by various reasons. The testicles are very sensitive and even a small injury can cause pain or discomfort. Pain in this area can come from both the testicle itself and from the epididymis.
In some cases, the pain may be related to a problem that starts in the groin, abdomen, or elsewhere. Kidney stones and hernias can cause a similar sensation. The cause of pain in this area can not always be determined.
Other possible causes of testicular discomfort may include:
- Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage due to diabetes.
- Epididymitis is inflammation of the testicles.
- A hydrocele is a collection of fluid that causes swelling in the scrotum.
- Inguinal hernia.
- Mumps.
- Orchitis is inflammation of the testicles.
- Retraction of the testicle into the groin is a condition that occurs in boys.
- A spermatocele is a collection of fluid in the testicles.
- Testicular trauma.
- Testicular cancer.
- Testicular torsion – torsion of the testicle.
- Cryptorchidism – testicular retention.
Urinary tract infection.
- Varicocele – dilated veins in the testicles.
- Vasectomy.
If you experience sudden and severe pain in the testicles, you should seek emergency medical attention. A painful sensation in this area, accompanied by a feeling of nausea, high fever, chills, or blood in the urine, is also a reason for immediate consultation with a doctor.
